Greta’s Goodies: String Art Décor

Even if you don’t consider yourself an artist, you can add some country Christmas to your home’s décor with Greta’s string art. All you’ll need are wood scraps, nails, a hammer, thread, a stencil, and some time to enjoy this relaxing art project.

Supplies Needed:

• Old pallets or scrap wood (plywood)
• Small nails
• Hammer
• Wood paint
• Stencils (download or make your own)
• Colored thread and/or yarn

Directions:

1. First, you’ll need to cut out or create a board for your string art project. Greta used wood from an old pallet fastened together in the back by a wood frame. You can also use a piece of scrap plywood.
   
   
   
   
2. Next, you’ll need a pattern. You can create your own with a computer and printer or download some free versions online. Ensure the stencil is large enough to cover most of your piece of wood. Then center your printed stencil to your board and tape it in place.
   
   
   
   
3. Working from left to right, hammer nails into the outside of each shape and/or letter. Always add a nail to every corner or sharpo angle. Add nails every ¼ inch.
   
   
4. Once you’ve added all the nails, pull the stencil up off the wood. Remove any remaining bits of paper left behind.
   
   
   
   
5. Now, decide what color you want to use. Greta used green on the tops of the trees and brown for the trunks.

Tie a slipknot on one end of your thread and add it to one of the nails.
   
   
7. Going from nail to nail, wind the thread around each peg on the outside of your image or letter. Then, begin filling in the image or letter with your thread, going from one nail to the next. Repeat until you’re happy with the results.
   
   
8. Change thread colors and move to another section of your sting art décor project.

Using wood paint, add some holiday charm. Greta added “Merry & Bright” to her design.
