Top 12 Bulbs for Springtime Blooms

There are a lot of ways to add color and wonder to your outdoor paradise. But nothing beats the fun and anticipation of springtime bulbs making their way into the sunshine. Depending on where you live in Oregon and Washington, we’ve put together a list of the 12 best bulbs to plant as well as when to plan them.

West of the Cascades

For best results anywhere west of the Cascade Range, plant your bulbs six weeks before the ground begins to freeze at night. Some experts suggest planning when the nights stay between 40-50º F. You can generally get away with planning in this region anywhere from October 1 to December 1.

East of the Cascades

In most regions east of the cascades, you can begin planting earlier, anywhere from late September to November 30. Try to plant your bulbs before the ground freezes at night, preferably when nighttime temperatures range from 40-50º F.
Where and How to Plant Your Bulbs

According to Oregon State University Extension Service, you want to plant your bulbs in well-drained soil. It’s also beneficial to have your bulbs in full sun. Once planted to the proper depth, cover the area with up to 4-inches of mulch to help protect the bulbs during the winter. Be sure to remove the mulch in the spring to make growing easier on your bulbs.
