Year-Round Lawn Care Tips (Part 1)

Americans love a good lawn. The thicker and more landscaped the better. With over 21-million acres of household lawns dotting the U.S., we’ve put together a year-round lawn care guide for your Northwest turf. This is part one of that guide.

January/February

Whether it’s been wet, cold, or both, your lawn needs some special care this time of year. For regions more prone to rain than snow, be sure to stay off your lawn as much as possible. Treading too much on your lawn can damage the grass and the soil.

Mowing: In some areas, lawns will start to grow as early as late February. If you live in those regions, carefully mow your lawn on your mower’s highest settings. Be sure to bag all the clipping. Leaving them on your yard during the winter months can cause fungal growth.

Spot Treating: If you find areas of fungi, use a fungicide. This is a good time to eliminate pervasive weeds as well.

March

Depending on your climate and elevation, this is a perfect time to kick your lawn into action.

Mowing: Again, be careful not to mow too often or too close to the ground.

Fertilizing: Hit your lawn with turf building fertilizer and a pre-emergent herbicide. This will help control crabgrass and other weeds.

Moss Killer: If your lawn has developed some mossy spots, kill it off with moss killer.

Rake: Go over your whole lawn removing debris and dead grass. Bag everything you collect or add it to your composter.

April

Things are starting to really grow. Here’s a list of outdoor chores that will encourage even more growth.

Mowing: As your lawn begins to grow, lower the blade and mow more often. Remove all grass clippings once you are done.

Aerate and Dethatch: Wait until late April to do a full aerating and dethatching of your lawn.

Seed: Do you have bare patches or spots where the mud overtook your lawn? Apply more seed to the area. Be sure to choose a seed that is similar to the grass already growing in your yard for a seamless look.

Spot Treating: Got dandelions, clover or other weeds? Spray them between spring storms. You’ll thank yourself when summer arrives.
