According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, thousands of construction jobs were added across the country in 2020, even with the pandemic causing work disruptions in almost every sector. That trend is expected to continue, which is why we’re taking a look at construction jobs as part of our ongoing feature of the trades.

What are the Construction Trades?

Construction jobs primarily focus on the constructing of engineering projects and buildings. This includes highways and roads as well as utilities. Work can include new construction, alterations, repairs, maintenance, and additions to buildings and infrastructure.

Those in the construction field include framers, painters, plumbers, carpenters, heavy equipment operators, landscapers, carpet installers, gasfitters, technicians, solar installers, bricklayers, drywallers, tilers, and more. The industry currently has over 500,000 openings for qualified workers, from commercial construction jobs to residential projects, including specific work for homeowners.

Carpenters work both inside and out to build, install, and repair frameworks and wooden structures. This work can include homes, offices, as well as highways and bridges. This is a learn-on-the-job career with plenty of potential, solid pay, and benefits.

Insulation Installers replace and install the materials needed to insulate the inside of a building from the outside elements. This can include mechanical systems. The job can be labor-intensive, requiring workers spend most of the day standing, kneeling, and working in extreme temperatures. Apprenticeship programs are available for some mechanical insulation careers, while on-the-job training is preferred by many employers.

Painters work on buildings, homes, large machinery, equipment, bridges and structures, applying paint and protective coatings. Professionals work quickly and precisely to maximize time and materials. This is a learn-on-the-job career with a lot of potential, including entrepreneurship.

Solar Photovoltaic Installers work on and install rooftop solar panel arrays and other photovoltaic systems. The work requires some electrical knowledge, which may require an associate degree or other technical certification.
