Cleaning Your Gutters and Controlling Moss
June 12, 2021Springtime chores can add up fast. Especially if you have a garden or fields that need attending. One of the more important chores you cannot afford to ignore is moss control on your roof and around your property, as well as cleaning the fall and winter out of your home’s rain gutters. We have you covered with a few simple suggestions.
Gutter Cleaning
Cleaning out the gutters late spring and fall can keep water from damaging your home’s foundation or siding. To clean your gutters, you’re going to need a ladder, a pair of rubber gloves, and a hose with a spray attachment.
First, use your hands to clean out any debris from inside the gutters. Then remove leaves and twigs from the downspouts. You might need to use a plumber’s snake or remove the downspouts to access items lodged in place.
Finally, use a hose to flush out the gutters and the downspouts. Once the water runs freely down the spouts, you’ll know everything is clean. If you have leaks, try Flex Seal® or another sealant.
Removing Moss from Your Property
Depending on where you live in the Pacific Northwest, moss can be an issue on walkways, landscaping stones, and livestock areas. Monterey Herbicidal Soap kills moss and algae quickly and easily. As an added bonus, it also kills weeds. Plus, it’s safe to use around your property, including fences, sidewalks, patios, gravel paths, driveways, and even trees. Simply follow the directions on the bottle for best results.
Looking for a more hands-on approach to moss removal from your walkways, patio, deck, or livestock areas? A good power washer can do wonders. Check out our article The Fine Art of Power Washing for tips on buying the right power washer and how to use one.
Removing Moss from Your Roof
In the fall or early spring, one of the ways to kill moss on your roof is with Moss Out!® Granules from Lilly Miller. By sprinkling the product on your roof just before the rains start in the fall or during one of the big storms in spring, you can effectively kill the moss on and around your shingles. As the rains continue, the dead moss will fall away into your gutters.
Coastal tip: Keep a bottle of Moss Out!® Granules nearby to periodically sprinkle on damp areas where moss is an issue, including walkways and barn overhangs.
Looking for a late spring or summertime moss killing solution? Moss Out!® Roofs and Walks can be used on cedar shakes, composition shingles, stucco, decks, fences, siding, bricks, walkways, driveways, gravel, and asphalt.
Just shake the bottle before each use and mix one part Moss Out!® Roofs and Walks with 19 parts water (6.8 oz. added to 1 gallon of water). Add more Moss Out! to your mixture to ensure proper coverage and effectiveness in areas thick with moss.
Coastal tip: Be careful if you spray Moss Out!® Roofs and Walks onto walkways. They can become slippery for a few hours after an application.
Moss B Ware is another option that is safe for roofs, patios, and walkways and is available at your nearby Coastal. Just apply Moss B Ware from the shaker container and let the chemicals do the rest of the work.
